The GCC Supreme Council approved the patent law for the GCC States during its 13th summit held in Abu Dhabi 21-22 September 1992. As of October 3, 1998, the GCC Patent Office started receiving applications.

The GCC Patent Office serves as a regional office towards filing patent applications in the gulf area. It comprises the States of United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar, and State of Kuwait, and is currently located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A single GCC patent office application, when matured to grant, will automatically extend to cover all GCC member states.

The applicant may also have the option of filing patent applications at each national office separately. These national offices grant patent protection in their respective countries or, if so wishes, may file an application with the regional office.

The GCC Patent law has been amended through a decision of the Supreme Council made during its 20th session held in Riyadh in November 1999. The bylaws were amended by the Ministerial Council during its 74th session held in April 2000, so as to bring the GCC Patent law and it's bylaws in conformity with international agreements and conventions related to patents.

The GCC Patent Office publishes Official Gazette periodically with matters relating to patents.
